Tell us what you think.

We've all heard you say, "that -- is a lazy ass officer". Tell us who you think is lazy and some of the things they do to get "special". This isn't a contest. It's only to highlight the worst of the worst and maybe give them that soft kick in the ass.

THE WHOLE EAST CHARLIE SHIFT..

Anonymous said...

Hey, I don't have a problem with the East, matter o' fact...I think most of the time they do just fine by me..least, insofar as work goes...now, ask me to understand them? Not so easy, a good handful of them seem to have permanent mic-mouth...but I guess the same could be said of any shift, really...

So thats my input...if your not hurried, rushed, or being forced to transmit in a hurry, please make sure there's some breathing room between the mic and your mouth.

Really cuts down on the "repeats"...I hate it as much as you do.

Ok..This is for the c-shift.You have a 2 man car.One of those officers has to be in court. The second officer shows special at the pct waiting on his partner. This same officer is doing nothing other than waiting, hears calls going out in his ward but wont get in to handle them or at least help handle them:and I'm talking report calls not something that takes 2 officers to handle. We all know traffic court is at 13:00.It doesn't take until 15:30 for you to be clear of traffic court.General session or criminal is different. And no the dispatcher has no idea what cars are in court once the shift is put in-service.The LT should let the dispatcher know and it would help if it was before we start calling that car number for a call.

Anonymous said...

God forbid you tell your dispatcher your doubling up before we have to call you. I cant stand having a shift put in service, then 10 minutes later, calling 2 ward car numbers, putting out the whole damn call, then asking for an acknowledgemnt, only to get

"Uh, show me and my partner doubled up as a 2-man car, same IBM's, and can you repeat the call, we missed it."

I know who you're talking about...wouldn't be m/w and f/w two-man car, would it? Hmmmm....they've been doing that crap for years.

The souteast pct, they show special as soon as the get in service. I am talking about the bravo shift.

If you want to show special, at least speak clearly so everybody will hear how lazy you plan to be all day. and if you hang out on a call for six of your eight hour shift you might as well show special. How long can you write a ticket?

the memphis police department sucks. i live 2 miles from the east precinct. it took them two hours to come to my house because of a walk by shooting in front of my house. the person walked down the street and got away. my cousin also had her house broke into, the burgler left blood everywhere from cutting his leg breaking in. the police said that they could not use the blood for dna, nor could they do fingerprints, because they were smeared. how did they know they were smeared if they didn't even dust? i also noticed that when a cop was shot at while serving a warrant, couple years ago, within 15 min, there were copters in the air, and the road was blocked off. i feel as though, if i were a cop, i would get police assistance if i needed, but since i am just a hardworking taxpayer, then i am not worth the time for their help. it is such a shame that it is like this.

Sure would be nice if some up there would remember why they took the job in the first place, or re-examine their own lives.

Stop bitching about how upset so and so is that his car was stolen, or so and so who is getting assaulted by his/her significant other.

Just because most are bad apples and might bring it back on themselves by returning time and again to the cause of their pain doesn't mean all of them are.

Lord forbid you find yourself in that position one day and discover what I'm talking about. Perhaps then you'll think twice about the way you speak of these people.

Shame on you. You've forgotten that you are here to help, not judge. Thats reserved for Someone mightier and stronger than you will ever be.

ok, let's get back to what the forum was supposed to be used for and cut out all the stupid crap being put in here....i would list that as the #1 thing that gets on my nerves, a bunch of women doing what women do best, degrading themselves in front of a bunch of men...most of the comments i have seen could be solved if the nasty/hating commenting people had better morals than the alley cat that apparently they grew up with!!! Grow up ladies (and i use that term loosely with some of you)

let me assure all of you that read this blog, there are good dispatchers, with values that work in the department and do care about others!! but the handful of the low moral females writing on this blog do not represent the majority of the decent dispatchers that work in the department and it is time someone let it be known not everyone is as foul mouth, evil minded &filthy acting as the ones that i have seen in here lately..thank you for letting me get that out of my system!

i work southeast delta and some things bother me. for the mosy part its the citizens that bother me. for about the past year or so we have had a dispatcher who has a speech problem on the mic but dispite her problem she is one of the best i have heard. she is always willing to help and will never hesitate to check on you if she think you are in trouble. i dont know her name but i think she is great. she shows alot of courage to do a job that requires her to speak alot especially with a speech problem. she is a great dispatcher and i catch myself getting inservice earlier and more often when she works our mic. congrats to you.

There's just no need for being nasty or hateful because your day at *work* was interrupted to do your *job*, and you find a situation petty or below you.

Everyone's job would be a lot easier if the patrol cars had laptops to recieve non-emergency calls on.

Nearly every other department in the country does this, it reduces radio traffic and confusion, and the narrative is right there on the screen if the officer needs to see it.

Instead we have to get you all to repeat things, can't even get on the mic half the time, etc etc etc.

This department is so backwards.

Judge sentences John Ford to another 14 years in prison

By Richard Locker (Contact), Memphis Commercial Appeal
Originally published 04:40 p.m., September 29, 2008
Updated 06:02 p.m., September 29, 2008

NASHVILLE — U.S. Dist. Judge Todd J. Campbell sentenced former state senator John Ford of Memphis late this afternoon to an additional 14 years in prison.

The sentence stemmed from Ford’s conviction in July for wire fraud and concealment in connection with his receipt of more than $854,000 from two major TennCare contractors while serving in the state legislature.

Rejecting Ford’s tearful plea for mercy, Campbell ordered the sentence to be served consecutively — that is, in addition to — the 5 years he is already serving in federal prison for a separate bribery conviction in Memphis that stemmed from an undercover FBI investigation called “Tennessee Waltz.”

Ford is 66 years old. Federal sentencing guidelines allow, at most, 15 percent off of a sentence for good behavior in prison, meaning he would be 81 to 85 years old when released — unless the conviction or sentence is overturned on appeal. Assistant Federal Public Defender Isaiah S. Gant said after the trial that he plans to appeal.

In imposing the sentence, Campbell said the penalty must fit the seriousness of the crime and said, “This is a very serious crime.”

Federal sentencing guidelines called for incarceration of between 17 and 21.8 years, although the statutory maximum for the crimes Ford was convicted of is 20 years. Federal prosecutors asked the judge to impose a sentence in the middle of that range, or 19.6 years.

Citing the non-violent nature of Ford’s crime, Gant asked the judge for three to five years, to be served concurrently with the existing sentence.

Several of the former senator’s sisters and nieces testified during the 3-hour hearing this afternoon and asked the judge for leniency, noting that his four youngest children are living in South Carolina with their aunt because their mother is also imprisoned.

Ford also directly appealed to the judge. Standing at the lawyer’s podium in a teal-green prison jumpsuit, Ford — for nearly three decades, one of the most powerful political figures in Memphis — cried and told the court that he accepts “complete and full responsibility for my actions, or inactions, relative to this case.

“I want to say this has been the most pain, the most humiliation, the most shame that has been brought on me, my family, my constituents and particularly my children. I can’t describe how difficult the last three years has been.... I ask you to have mercy and allow me to see my children again.”

Ford was convicted in July of two counts of wire fraud and four counts of concealing material facts in connection with $433,000 in consulting fees he received from Doral Dental and another $420,000 from OmniCare Health Plan, both contractors with TennCare, the state’s expanded Medicaid program. He is serving time in a federal prison in Louisiana.

Cheers to you, 8:53am. To the decent, hardworking and pleasant-minded ones, its an honor and a privilege working with you.

This is true, myself like most officers will be more than happy to get in and handle the calls if the dispatcher actually acted like they knew what on earth was going on. I was just wondering do we still have a ward system around here? What happened to all the real dispatchers like: Amy,Kay,Hope,Scott,Mark,Greg,Pam there are many more, and I am sorry if I didn't mention your name, that really knew how to handle the radio and get officers to do more but when you have these new idots on there, well lets just say when you send somone across the precinct to another ward, When you could wait just a few mins., and yes I know about holding calls but damn, then everything gets f***** up the rest of the shift. I must say there seem to be a few of the new dispatchers that seem to be trying and most officers know it so they will try to help them out. I am sorry if I don't know her name but the female with the speach problem really seems to try to do a good job you can tell that she was either trained by someone who knows how to dispatch or took some advise from one that did and there are a few more but damn people please put someone on there on the "c" shift from time to time that has a clue. I am sorry I got so long winded but I just had to get that off my chest. Thanks...

I'm sorry but I have to say this..Richard Morrow needs to get a life...stop picking on the dispatchers. His never ending questions when given a call, his wanting to run the radio whenever there is a vehicle or foot chase...AND telling the dispatcher to be quiet on the air..uncalled for.I wish the Lt. would double him up with someone just to hopefully keep him quiet but that wont happen cause no one wants to ride with him.

To the officer that posted on Oct 11 @ 12:17: I understand you don't like to go way across the precinct to another ward and yes, sometimes it screws things up. But, I always check with the ward officer first if he doesn't have something serious going on. You must remember that the police department is there to protect and serve (while some people don't need service but a swift kick in the a**). I don't work c-shift anymore but sometimes (on all shifts) we have to do what we have to do to keep the people in the office and across the hall off our a***s. With that being said, thank you for all the hard work that you do and don't get mad at us when you have to go out of your ward. We have 3 mottos in dispatch: 1. Send Somebody 2. It's not your car 3. City Gas or Your Ass. Take care and be safe!

I don't get mad having to go out of my ward from time to time i know it is part of the job. With that being said it is the dispatchers that don't even seem to look at thier screens or just ask, it is these dispatchers taht send you across the whole damn prect. and the car that is in taht ward is in service and has even told the dispatcher they are in, then the dispatcher that must have been asleep sends you there anyway. I know most of ya'll that have been there a while, with a few exceptions, do try to do the right thing.... Thanks

This here, is a personal peeve of mine and several of the other hard working dispatchers. Fewer things are more annoying (Lavern excluded) than working your ass off, phones and radio, and watching your neighbors fuck around and risk an officer's life by paying as little attention as possible...or sliding by on the phones, not readying, walking around, etc.

On behalf of the dispatchers who give a damn and pay attention (as well as work hard and stay civil on the radio), I apologize for whoever it was that dropped the ball on that one.

Personally, I keep an eye on who has been in service for how long, versus their partner, and who has handled multiple calls, versus who has hung out, and try to dispatch accordingly. Whenever possible, I prefer to be fair within the confines of doing my job properly.

With that said...stay safe, officer. We're all in it together, and you may never know my face or name, but you can trust that if I've got your radio...I've got your back.

Police prepare for unrest
By Alexander Bolton
Posted: 10/21/08 07:58 PM [ET]

Police departments in cities across the country are beefing up their ranks for Election Day, preparing for possible civil unrest and riots after the historic presidential contest.

Public safety officials said in interviews with The Hill that the election, which will end with either the nation’s first black president or its first female vice president, demanded a stronger police presence.

Some worry that if Barack Obama loses and there is suspicion of foul play in the election, violence could ensue in cities with large black populations. Others based the need for enhanced patrols on past riots in urban areas (following professional sports events) and also on Internet rumors.

Democratic strategists and advocates for black voters say they understand officers wanting to keep the peace, but caution that excessive police presence could intimidate voters.

Sen. Obama (Ill.), the Democratic nominee for president, has seen his lead over rival Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) grow in recent weeks, prompting speculation that there could be a violent backlash if he loses unexpectedly.

Cities that have suffered unrest before, such as Detroit, Chicago, Oakland and Philadelphia, will have extra police deployed.

In Oakland, the police will deploy extra units trained in riot control, as well as extra traffic police, and even put SWAT teams on standby.

“Are we anticipating it will be a riot situation? No. But will we be prepared if it goes awry? Yes,” said Jeff Thomason, spokesman for the Oakland Police Department.

“I think it is a big deal — you got an African-American running and [a] woman running,” he added, in reference to Obama and GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. “Whoever wins it, it will be a national event. We will have more officers on the street in anticipation that things may go south.”

The Oakland police last faced big riots in 2003 when the Raiders lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl. Officials are bracing themselves in case residents of Oakland take Obama’s loss badly.

Political observers such as Hilary Shelton and James Carville fear that record voter turnout could overload polling places on Election Day and could raise tension levels.

Shelton, the director of the NAACP’s Washington bureau, said inadequate voting facilities is a bigger problem in poor communities with large numbers of minorities.

“What are local election officials doing to prepare for what people think will be record turnout at the polls?” said Shelton, who added that during the 2004 election in Ohio voters in predominantly black communities had to wait in line six to eight hours to vote.

“On Election Day, if this continues, you may have some tempers flare; we should be prepared to deal with that but do it without intimidation,” said Shelton, who added that police have to be able to maintain order at polling stations without scaring voters, especially immigrants from “police states.”

PITTSBURGH -- A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.

Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank's surveillance cameras.

The robber is described as a dark-skinned black man, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 200 pounds with a medium build, short black hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing dark colored jeans, a black undershirt and black shoes.

The Obama-Biden campaign released a statement, commenting on the attack. The statement said "Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

Well I am pleased I found this blog.
PLEASE print this and tape it to the Appling Farms Dispatchers station...
i ride in the apple farms A shift.
When you know that a ward is tied up PLEASE dont call the same car for every thing that happens in the other ward. This is why you have so many officers that "hang out" for 3 hours on a traffic stop...on my shift on numerous occasions I have been assigned to a ward and answered calls on covington pike and a soon as I got in service i got a robbery call at the 9000 block of stage road.
Please SPREAD THE WEALTH, I passed several cop cars on the way to that call. I tire of being the whipping boy for the precinct. I know what you are thinking...(i cant give a call to a different car in a ward that is a half mile away)...Well here is a news flash--NOBODY stays in their assigned area anyway.
So...Could you please stop calling the same car OVER and OVER to cover a ward thats tied up???
I have noticed also that while I may get several calls in MY ward and adjacent to me another ward car may go all night and you never ever call their number --(but i'm expected to handle the other wards in the precinct) . are you worried that you may disturb them from their slumber, or dinner?
Rest assured that 826 and 828 cars are MPD also and they deserve their share of the pie also!
I remember on night I was the only car doing anything self initiated and the 822 car got "tied up" what did the dispatcher in question do? ask me if i could clear!! Well I said NO, so then my ward partner got the call. Why in the world would you not go down the list and give everybody a chance to "cover" a ward??? There is plenty of in-service cars to take up the slack! Why not spread the wealth? The roll call is a sheet of cops listed--SHARE the workload.
Oh, one last thing. I wouldnt hold a 911 hangup call for an hour while I take a burglary report, thats going to bite you in the as@ someday!
On yet another occasion an officer had an armed robbery suspect stopped and I truly was a LONG way off, 10 minutes it took me to get to him, but alas I passed a new MPD charger one half mile from the officer requesting backup! and yes, "THEY" were going the OPPOSITE direction! This is why we need GPS on the city police cars. A lot of this kind of crap would stop.

in case you didnt know, which you obviously dont, The dispatchers who screw you with a late call are Alpha shift dispatchers. We change over at 2345!! Anything else you would like to know?

What you really don't realize is that nobody's "screwin'" with you, Pal. The call has to be put out because of liability. Holding a call so you can get off on time puts the dispatcher wide open for disciplinary charges, since Communicatons P&P, which you don't know anything about, says they will dispatch up until Sig C is given. Dispatchers are subject to civil litigation if anything escalates on the scene that results in injury/death to anyone because the dispatcher held the call or a complaint about response time comes in directly or thru IAB. Officers say " Well, Sir/Mamam, they just gave me the call. If they'd given it to me earlier, I'd been here sooner." Would you be willing to stand up in court in a civil liability lawsuit and take the hit for the dispatcher because he/she held a call so you can get off on time? How about a big resounding "NO" on that one? Would "I held the call so they could get off on time" be acceptable testimony if it was your family member in danger? Another resounding "NO!!". It just doesn't work that way, it never has, period.
Dispatchers aren't bitchy as a rule. Just tired of having to call you half a dozen times (or more) just to get "OKAYYY, give me a location." (cause I don't wanna get my mapbook out). Then it's, "repeat the callll" (after putting it out 3-4 times already) after you've OK'd it, then it's "Call the complaintant back and have them step out"(cause I don't wanna have to walk alll the wayyyyy to the doorrrrr--(all of 30ft.)) When calling the complaintant back with no answer, and other cars making similar requests while I'm on the phone, you say "Oh, never mind, I located the complaintant". That would put anyone in a bad mood. It's the same mood you would be in when you have to tell the same drunk to get out of the street 4 or 5 times. You're not real cordial, either.
Nahhh Pal, nobody's screwing with you. Dispatchers have families to feed, bills to pay and a job to do (one that you wouldn't want) just like you do. Big difference is they are held accountable by tapes and computer records of everything they do or do not do (like NOT putting a car on a call.) These records are accurate to the second and can be, and are, subpoened to court. They are as serious about their job as you were yours the last time you had your pistol out on a call or you walked up to an occuppied car in the dark of night alone. They're as serious about response time as you would be if both you and your car were wired, audio and video taped and computerized accurate to the second. You'd go screamin' to the Union to get it disconnected. They did years ago when the MPD considered GPS tracking systems.
If the dispatcher seems to be in a bad mood, it's quite possibly caused by the increased dispatcher workload caused by the lack of cooperation of those on the frequency and the inattention of the field LT's. to address it.
The East has been pissin' dispatchers off for years and it's not always East and thats nothing new, either. It's never been the Dispatcher's job to keep you happy or to see to it that you go home ON TIME...just to see to it that you do get to go home!!!!

I could not have said it better and just for Lt on all frequencies, please set an example and PAY ATTENTION, we shouldn't have to call you numerous times, ANSWER!!!!!

To all FTOs...I'll teach my rookie dispatcher to give all bullshit calls to the junior ward car IF you remember to teach your rookie to GET IN SERVICE before going somewhere else and starting a FOOT CHASE>>>>B129....lets all teach according to P & P.

378 Delta and 368 Delta is the laziest MFer. How many times can they cut a special at the precinct. I wish yall would bust them out and MAKE them handle their ward.

I wounder why when dispatchers "change over" they never know what the hell is going on I thought it was communications. Trust me I am not a rookie nor an ass sucker but I do respect dispatchers. As for the GPS in cars I wish they would put them in cars because I am tired of going into other peoples ward for calls and the ward car is at Target or Walmart. Best yet is the Walmart at 7575 Winchester. You will go there for a holding prisoner call and TWO F***ING Ridgeway cars are there shopping.

Let us say the work day of a dispatcher is not one most would like, 1st we come into a breakroom that is entirely to small for the number of dispatchers required to be there, we have lockers that are too small to put our belongings in, not to mention, garbage that smells up the whole place , that doesnt get taken out on weekends, dirt and dust every where , then we go out on the floor to chairs that fall when you sit in them and depending on where you sit tempertures run anywhere from 30degrees to 110 degrees, again we sit down to filthy consoles and that is before we ever beging dispatching, yes then some dispatchers do not keep up with locations as well as others, but no one wil ever point this out to them..they read a paper telling all dispatchers of the problems, yes i will sit down & do a roll call to make sure u are where they say you are, i really want to know for your saftey. Then we work with radios that half way work, cant hear you half the time, but then you shold know that becaus you cant hear us half the time..yes i get sick of say repeat more than you get of hearing me say reapeat..would you rather me not ask & guess that i heard you? Officers as a general are good to dispatchers, we have some jerks just like you do, we have lazy just like you do...but like you what are we gonna do with them but continue on & do the best job we can & get you back home to your family

I'm just sick of the whole communications department period. Its dirty, stale air, either too hot or too cold, you almost have to sit on top of each other. Most supervisiors wont listen to you if you have a complaint.Co-workers not pulling their share of the work load, they want to get up and visit with other dispatchers.Back-stabbing and swollen heads of some have no place here.Believe me,as soon as I find something else..I'm out of here and no one will miss me.Just another rotation on the revolving door of communications.I hope consitions improve for those that are here for the next 20 years.

you got it right, the place is filthy,no room to move, no one cares..yet we pay a fee for 911 and I have seen no improvment in the building at all, county got their dispatchers out into a nicer building, we were left behind with broken equipment Larry wouldnt have in his office in a million years...and the new administration that has come in never come in & sit down in a chair that the arms fall off or it it falls to the ground or the seat is so hard you will have back trouble the rest of your life, why dont you "so called" caring big wigs come walk in our shoes (sit with us) we get cursed probably more than the officers on the street but we cant talk back, we have to take the abuse, so why cant we at least be somewhat comfortable while we do...?

Reading this stuff makes me wonder if I have made a mistake.

I JUST got an offer as a radio dispatcher after applying almost 2 years ago. I currently have a job but this pays a lot more. I can live fine off of what I make now, but can't do much in the saving money for a house or future kids department....

Does anyone have any advice? I put my notice in at my job but I could take it back without an issue.

To the person thinking of accepting the job.We are not joking about the enviroment.Ask them if you can come up for a walk through.I personally have developed respiratory problems from being in this room for the last few years. The supervisors will never give you the same answer twice in a row.Nor will 2 supervisors give you the same answer. The rules are always changing.Even though they have hired several people ( over 40)in the last 2 years its still very hard to get an extra day off when YOU want it.As a new hire you will be rotating your shifts and days off every month or two then when you get released you will be on c shift ( 15:45 -23:45).The pay is good but we still don't make what the FD makes and we have to answer the phones and transfer the calls to them. Its your call if you want to work here but you need to know exactly what you are going to be walking into before you get here. Its only right.

I agree. You should deinatley come up there and sit for awhile. They will allow it. Several of the ones in the past have done it. Coming up there and sitting with someone for several hours, listening in on phones and on the radio and just sitting back and watching whats going on and observing the floor can give you a good indication of what you are in for. Dont get me wrong, I love my job, but for you , remember, money is not everything. Sure making more money is nice, but if you are not going to be happy, what is it really worth?

as far as lazy officers,,,,well most of them are, but I have to say Ridgeway station (C/D) is the worst, with Airways station (C/D)following in a close second.

Thanks for the responses. Who should I contact about being able to sit in and listen? That definitely sounds like a good idea. I have a week until I'm supposed to go to training class at Tillman Station.

Just call 543-2711 ..thats the supervisors office.Good luck.

As far as the rest...if you do decide to go through with it and take it, good luck...but please, stick with it for the right reasons. I'd hate to see another person come in and get twisted to the dark side, constantly talking and bemoaning about the job and all the horrible people they have to come in contact with.

Its all in your perspective...you can flip it, you know...realize you are in a unique position to influence someone else who is having a horrible day. Maybe not all of them, maybe not even most of them...but you'll get that one in the middle of all the rest, and realize you made the difference for them. Just enough to make a bad situation bearable.

Its what keeps me doing it, and why I still love it.

I'm super busy this week, but I called and had a walk-through arranged for Thursday evening.

The money is definitely a plus but not the only reason.

What's the busiest shift on average?

In my interview I asked about turnover but all they really said were most people quit because the job wasn't what they expected. Do people quit or get fired more often?

Anonymous said...

Most quit for one reason or another.Turnover is high.Bravo and Charlie shifts are about the same work wise..there's very little down time.Alpha is busy, quite, then kinda busy.

I'm cracking up at the "lucky" person finally accepted as a dispatcher. Sitting with someone won't tell the whole story - it's definitely something you've got to experience over a longer period than a couple of hours to really understand. I left after 7 years, mostly due to not being able to get off the 4-12 shift. The other dispatchers, for the most part, and the officers, for some part, weren't the problem. I did finally buy stock in Excedrin, though, since I was basically sending them my paychecks, and asking for change back. But, now, many years later, I wouldn't give anything for the experience - if for no other reason, but to have figured out at least one job I don't want to have to do again! However, if you're serious about it and you earn the respect of the officers, the time you put in there can be quite rewarding. Good luck!
