Announcement.

We received the following death notice from a reader:

Hello,

I don't know who you are and don't know what to call you so I'll just say
hello. I was wondering if you could put a small item on your blog about the
death of George Methvin. As you may or may not know I worked in Communications
for many years. George was one of the Communications Supervisors. He retired
after 33 years of service. 33 years and never called off sick one day. He was
just a decent, hard working guy that really tried to get along with everyone. I
know alot of your readers that have been around a while will recognize his name.
It's my understanding he suffered a heart attack at his sons home today
(Saturday). I know your blog is not about death notices but George was well
liked and I'm sure alot of folks would like to know about his passing. I was
told there will be a graveside funeral in Iuka, MS on Monday the 29th.

George was 1 in a million, he treated people with respect and was respected. He was a gentle giant! He would allow you to do your job with very little intervention but handed down reprimands when needed but in a kind manor. You knew you really messed up when George had to write you up, but he was fair & just in everything he did...Its a shame we couldnt carbon copy the man..He was truly a great man...God bless you George!!

Pitchfork Time
by Patrick J. Buchanan
03/03/2009

In his campaign and inaugural address, Barack Obama cast himself as a moderate man seeking common ground with conservatives.

Yet, his budget calls for the radical restructuring of the U.S. economy, a sweeping redistribution of power and wealth to government and Democratic constituencies. It is a declaration of war on the Right.

The real Obama has stood up, and lived up to his ranking as the most left-wing member of the United States Senate.

Barack has no mandate for this. He was even behind McCain when the decisive event that gave him the presidency occurred -- the September collapse of Lehman Brothers and the market crash.

Republicans are under no obligation to render bipartisan support to this statist coup d'etat. For what is going down is a leftist power grab that is anathema to their principles and philosophy.

Where the U.S. government usually consumes 21 percent of gross domestic product, this Obama budget spends 28 percent in 2009 and runs a deficit of $1.75 trillion, or 12.7 percent of GDP. That is four times the largest deficit of George W. Bush and twice as large a share of the economy as any deficit run since World War II.

Add that 28 percent of GDP spent by the U.S. government to the 12 percent spent by states, counties and cities, and government will consume 40 percent of the economy in 2009.

We are not "headed down the road to socialism." We are there.

Since the budget was released, word has come that the U.S. economy did not shrink by 3.8 percent in the fourth quarter, but 6.2 percent. All the assumptions in Obama's budget about growth in 2009 and 2010 need to be revised downward, and the deficits revised upward.

Look for the deficit for 2009 to cross $2 trillion.

Who abroad is going to lend us the trillions to finance our deficits without demanding higher interest rates on the U.S. bonds they are being asked to hold? And if we must revert to the printing press to create the money, what happens to the dollar?

As Americans save only a pittance and have lost -- in the value of homes, stocks, bonds and other assets -- $15 trillion to $20 trillion since 2007, how can the people provide the feds with the needed money?

In his speech to Congress, Obama promised new investments in energy, education and health care. Every kid is going to get a college degree. We're going to find a cure for cancer.

Who is going to pay for all this?

The top 2 percent, the filthy rich who got all those Bush tax breaks, say Democrats. But the top 5 percent of income earners already pay 60 percent of U.S. income taxes, while the bottom 40 percent pays nothing.

Those paying a federal tax rate of 35 percent will see it rise to near 40 percent and will lose a fifth of the value of their deductions for taxes, mortgage interest and charitable contributions.

Yet, two-thirds of small businesses are taxed at the same rate as individuals. Consider what this means to the owner of a restaurant and bar in Los Angeles open from noon to midnight, where a husband and wife each put in 80 hours a week.

At year's end, the couple finds they have actually made a profit of $500,000 that they can take home in salary.

What is the Obama-Schwarzenegger tax take on that salary?

Their U.S. tax rate will have hit 39.6 percent.

Their California income tax will have hit 9.55 percent.

Medicare payroll taxes on the proprietor as both employer and salaried employee will be $14,500. Social Security payroll taxes for the proprietor as both employer and employee will be $13,243.

In short, U.S. and state income and payroll taxes will consume half of all the pair earned for some 8,000 hours of work.

From that ravaged salary they must pay a state sales tax of 8.25 percent, gas taxes for the 50-mile commute, and tens of thousands in property taxes on both their restaurant and home. And, after being pilloried by politicians for having feasted in the Bush era, they are now told the tax deduction they get for contributing to the church is to be cut 20 percent, while millions of Obama voters, who paid no U.S. income tax at all, will be getting a tax cut -- i.e., a fat little check -- in April.

Any wonder native-born Californians are fleeing the Golden Land?

Markets are not infallible. But the stock market has long been a "lead indicator" of where the economy will be six months from now. What are the markets, the collective decisions of millions of investors, saying?

Having fallen every month since Obama's election, with January and February the worst two months in history, they are telling us the stimulus package will not work, that Tim Geithner is clueless about how to save the banks, that the Obama budget portends disaster for the republic.

The president says he is gearing up for a fight on his budget.

Good. Let's give him one.

Copy these down as there will be a test later.----Thaddeus Matthews

12 Things The Negro Must Do For Himself by Nannie Helen Burroughs
(Circa Early 1900's)
1. The Negro Must Learn To Put First Things First. The First Things Are: Education; Development of Character Traits; A Trade and Home Ownership.

The Negro puts too much of his earning in clothes, in food, in show and in having what he calls "a good time." The Dr. Kelly Miller said, "The Negro buys what he WANTS and begs for what he Needs." Too true!

2. The Negro Must Stop Expecting God and White Folk To Do For Him What He Can Do For Himself.

It is the "Divine Plan" that the strong shall help the weak, but even God does not do for man what man can do for himself. The Negro will have to do exactly what Jesus told the man (in John 5:8) to do--Carry his own load--"Take up your bed and walk."

3. The Negro Must Keep Himself, His Children And His Home Clean And Make The Surroundings In Which He Lives Comfortable and Attractive.

He must learn to "run his community up"--not down. We can segregate by law, we integrate only by living. Civilization is not a matter of race, it is a matter of standards. Believe it or not--some day, some race is going to outdo the Anglo-Saxon, completely. It can be the Negro race, if the Negro gets sense enough. Civilization goes up and down that way.

4. The Negro Must Learn To Dress More Appropriately For Work And For Leisure.

Knowing what to wear--how to wear it--when to wear it and where to wear it, are earmarks of common sense, culture and also an index to character.

5. The Negro Must Make His Religion An Everyday Practice And Not Just A Sunday-Go-To-Meeting Emotional Affair.

6. The Negro Must Highly Resolve To Wipe Out Mass Ignorance.

The leaders of the race must teach and inspire the masses to become eager and determined to improve mentally, morally and spiritually, and to meet the basic requirements of good citizenship.

We should initiate an intensive literacy campaign in America, as well as in Africa. Ignorance--satisfied ignorance--is a millstone abut the neck of the race. It is democracy's greatest burden.

Social integration is a relationship attained as a result of the cultivation of kindred social ideals, interests and standards.

It is a blending process that requires time, understanding and kindred purposes to achieve. Likes alone and not laws can do it.

7. The Negro Must Stop Charging His Failures Up To His "Color" And To White People's Attitude.

The truth of the matter is that good service and conduct will make senseless race prejudice fade like mist before the rising sun.

God never intended that a man's color shall be anything other than a badge of distinction. It is high time that all races were learning that fact. The Negro must first QUALIFY for whatever position he wants. Purpose, initiative, ingenuity and industry are the keys that all men use to get what they want. The Negro will have to do the same. He must make himself a workman who is too skilled not to be wanted, and too DEPENDABLE not to be on the job, according to promise or plan. He will never become a vital factor in industry until he learns to put into his work the vitalizing force of initiative, skill and dependability. He has gone "RIGHTS" mad and "DUTY" dumb.

8. The Negro Must Overcome His Bad Job Habits.

He must make a brand new reputation for himself in the world of labor. His bad job habits are absenteeism, funerals to attend, or a little business to look after. The Negro runs an off and on business. He also has a bad reputation for conduct on the job--such as petty quarrelling with other help, incessant loud talking about nothing; loafing, carelessness, due to lack of job pride; insolence, gum chewing and--too often--liquor drinking. Just plain bad job habits!

9. He Must Improve His Conduct In Public Places.

Taken as a whole, he is entirely too loud and too ill-mannered.

There is much talk about wiping out racial segregation and also much talk about achieving integration.

Segregation is a physical arrangement by which people are separated in various services.

It is definitely up to the Negro to wipe out the apparent justification or excuse for segregation.

The only effective way to do it is to clean up and keep clean. By practice, cleanliness will become a habit and habit becomes character.

10. The Negro Must Learn How To Operate Business For People--Not For Negro People, Only.

To do business, he will have to remove all typical "earmarks," business principles; measure up to accepted standards and meet stimulating competition, graciously--in fact, he must learn to welcome competition.

11. The Average So-Called Educated Negro Will Have To Come Down Out Of The Air. He Is Too Inflated Over Nothing. He Needs An Experience Similar To The One That Ezekiel Had--(Ezekiel 3:14-19). And He Must Do What Ezekiel Did

Otherwise, through indifference, as to the plight of the masses, the Negro, who thinks that he has escaped, will lose his own soul. It will do all leaders good to read Hebrew 13:3, and the first Thirty-seven Chapters of Ezekiel.

A race transformation itself through its own leaders and its sensible "common people." A race rises on its own wings, or is held down by its own weight. True leaders are never "things apart from the people." They are the masses. They simply got to the front ahead of them. Their only business at the front is to inspire to masses by hard work and noble example and challenge them to "Come on!" Dante stated a fact when he said, "Show the people the light and they will find the way!"

There must arise within the Negro race a leadership that is not out hunting bargains for itself. A noble example is found in the men and women of the Negro race, who, in the early days, laid down their lives for the people. Their invaluable contributions have not been appraised by the "latter-day leaders." In many cases, their names would never be recorded, among the unsung heroes of the world, but for the fact that white friends have written them there.

"Lord, God of Hosts, Be with us yet."

The Negro of today does not realize that, but, for these exhibits A's, that certainly show the innate possibilities of members of their own race, white people would not have been moved to make such princely investments in lives and money, as they have made, for the establishment of schools and for the on-going of the race.

12. The Negro Must Stop Forgetting His Friends. "Remember."

Read Deuteronomy 24:18. Deuteronomy rings the big bell of gratitude. Why? Because an ingrate is an abomination in the sight of God. God is constantly telling us that "I the Lord thy God delivered you"--through human instrumentalities.

The American Negro has had and still has friends--in the North and in the South. These friends not only pray, speak, write, influence others, but make unbelievable, unpublished sacrifices and contributions for the advancement of the race--for their brothers in bonds.

The noblest thing that the Negro can do is to so live and labor that these benefactors will not have given in vain. The Negro must make his heart warm with gratitude, his lips sweet with thanks and his heart and mind resolute with purpose to justify the sacrifices and stand on his feet and go forward--"God is no respector of persons. In every nation, he that feareth him and worketh righteousness is" sure to win out. Get to work! That's the answer to everything that hurts us. We talk too much about nothing instead of redeeming the time by working.

R-E-M-E-M-B-E-R

In spite of race prejudice, America is brim full of opportunities. Go after them!

Widow fights for police pension
Baker says husband's death fits line-of-duty rules

By Hank Dudding (Contact), Memphis Commercial Appeal
Monday, April 20, 2009

James Baker's last three years as a Memphis police officer were particularly rough.

He was shot twice in 2004 after a holdup in Raleigh, then injured his shoulder when he fell.

He was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

And he was injured twice more, the second time damaging the rotator cuff in his shoulder during a struggle with a suspect.

His 12-year career as a police officer had become an ordeal, but it was about to become worse, with life-altering ramifications for his wife, Alesia, and two sons.

Alesia Baker, a nurse, found her 46-year-old husband dead at their Arlington home Oct. 22, 2007, 12 days after surgery on his shoulder.

Numbed from the shock -- "I had just lost my husband, my best friend. My world had just been torn apart" -- she made a decision that's haunted her for a year and a half.

She decided against asking for an autopsy, since there was no evidence of foul play. Her husband's cardiologist later signed a death certificate that indicated Baker died from a heart problem, she said.

She's convinced her decision under stress led to the city of Memphis Pension Board's denial of full benefits last month for her husband's death, the difference between her getting 60 percent of his pay and 30 percent.

"If I had it all to do over again, I would have done it differently," she said last week. "It's just a hard decision to make."

The way she sees it, her husband's death resulted from surgery to fix an on-the-job injury, and he'd also been on a mix of medications for his injuries and his post-traumatic stress disorder.

But the pension board saw things differently.

The board "makes line-of-duty determinations based on medical evidence by at least two qualified physicians," said Toni Holman-Turner, spokeswoman for Mayor Willie Herenton, in an e-mail this week.

"The board's investigation ... revealed that Mr. Baker's death was not work-related and therefore does not quality her for a line-of-duty pension, but it does qualify her for a regular pension ... that she currently receives," she said.

Alesia Baker, 46, paid $2,700 out of her own pocket for a lawyer to represent her before the board. Now she's asking the Memphis Police Association if there's anything it can do.

"We don't get too many widows that are denied a pension," said police association president J.D. Sewell. "And, of course, once you've been ruled against, it's an uphill battle."

Sewell said even if a police officer or firefighter's death is ruled to be the result of a heart problem or hypertension, that's enough to consider it an on-the-job death, because of the stressful nature of the work.

The union is asking its attorney to see if there are grounds for an appeal, he said.

The pension board's decision also seems unfair, Sewell said, because of another case in which the board ruled a Memphis police officer's widow could receive full benefits after her husband was shot to death while working an off-duty security job.

"We're saying, how can you give her a duty-related pension when it was clearly not duty-related, and not give it to (Alesia Baker)," Sewell said. "I'm glad they gave it to her, but they really need to give it to James Baker's widow."

Alesia and James Baker -- relatives and close friends called him Chris -- grew up in the Berclair area and started dating Jan. 25, 1979. "I couldn't find anything wrong with him," she said. They were married in 1981.

"He was so brilliant. He knew anything and everything about cars, computers," she said. "He would do anything and everything for anybody."

The couple had two sons, Matthew, 22, and Jesse, 21.

Baker was shot Sept. 24, 2004, after he interrupted a robbery at a Walgreens on Covington Pike. He chased a suspect from the store's parking lot into a wooded area, but was shot in the shoulder and hand when the man pulled a gun while being handcuffed.

The suspect, Narzarius Jackson, escaped with a handcuff dangling from one arm, police said, but he was arrested two days later. Jackson's brother, Ronald Walker Jr., 24, was killed in a shootout with officers as he tried to get away from the Walgreens during the same robbery, police said.

After the shooting, Alesia Baker said, her husband changed. Taking medication for his stress problems, he'd wake up in the middle of the night and wander the house looking for criminals.

When she left for work the day of his death, she thought he sounded congested, but was relieved he'd had a good night's sleep.

The death certificate already cost her a $400,000 accidental death policy on her husband, she said, and she's hoping it's not too late to influence pension board members to reverse their decision.

"They had their minds made up when we walked in the door, and that's the way I still feel," she said.

Firefighter's attorney charges "overzealous arrest"

April 24, 2009 06:00 PM
By Nick Kenney - bio | email | Follow us on Twitter

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A 20-year veteran of the Memphis Fire Department has been placed on paid leave after being charged with theft for stealing a trailer that authorities found parked behind his Arlington home.

Battalion Chief William Jones made his first court appearance Friday in a case his lawyer, Robert Paris, can't believe.

"One of the worst examples of just an overzealous arrest that I've ever seen," Paris said.

According to the affidavit of complaint, Jones stole a $1,500 trailer. It was bait, belonging to the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, and rigged with a tracking device. Parked near the Loosahatchie, the trailer vanished at one night at 8pm.

By 9:04pm, investigators found the trailer at Jones house.

"The law doesn't operate under a finders-keepers system," Paris said.

Jones said he took the trailer believing it had been stolen and abandoned, and planned to try to find its rightful owner.

He did not, however, call police. According to Paris, Jones didn't think he had to. Jones allegedly planned to print flyers looking for the trailer's owner and post them at a store near his house.

Paris said Jones claims he did the same thing in the past.

Paris has a letter from a former employee of Jones' side business that says he remembers Jones finding a stolen trailer in a ditch in 2003. Then, Jones posted a flyer, ultimately re-uniting trailer with owner.

Paris said Jones hasn't stolen anything.

"I fully hope and expect that this case will be resolved and dismissed," he said.

In the end, it's up to the court. Williams Jones goes back on Tuesday.

Former Memphis officer admits to stealing from motorists

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Federal officials say a former Memphis police officer has pleaded guilty to charges of stealing money from Hispanic motorists.

According to a released statement Thursday from the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, Carlton Moore admitted that on March 1 and March 14, 2008, and on May 4, 2009, he stole cash from three Hispanic drivers he pulled over while on duty.

During the stops, he ordered the victims out of their vehicles, patted them down and removed personal items from them. The statement says he then stole money before returning the items and releasing the drivers.

Moore pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to three counts of violating civil rights for stealing money from motorists while acting under color of law. He faces up to three years in prison.
